Tesso flies towards an enemy on a gold coin and smacks them on the head while they are distracted by the shining gold, dealing damage equal to 100% of his ATK, and has a 50% (+ Effect HIT) chance of decreasing the target's Crit by 20%. Occasionally, you need to do Demon Quizzes in Demon Encounter. I didn’t make a guide on these questions before since they are not hard to do and I am sure there are other guides elsewhere. Anyways since I have received several requests to do Demon Quiz, here are some of the questions and answers.

'Jinjenju' (人面樹) from the Konjaku Hyakki Shūi by Toriyama Sekien

Jinmenju or Ninmenju (人面樹, human-face tree) is a legendary Chinese tree in the Edo PeriodKonjaku Hyakki Shūi by Toriyama Sekien.^[1]

Concept[edit]

The picture depicts it as a tree blooming flowers like human heads, with the following explanatory text:

In mountain valleys, its flowers just like human heads, without a word, they merely just smile away, smile away until its petals fall just like that (山谷にありその花人の首のごとしものいはずしてたゞ笑ふ事しきりなりしきりにわらへばそのまま落花すといふ)^[2]

Besides Japanese yōkai, the Konjaku Hyakki Shūi also included publications of plants, animals, and yōkai outside of Japan, and this 'jinmenju' as well as the Wakan Sansai Zue quote from the Sancai Tuhui, and it depicts a tree from a land called 'Daishikoku' (大食国, big-eat country).^[2]

According to the Sancai Tuhui, Daishikoku is a land thousand ri southwest, with flowers like human hands, and upon asking it questions, its flowers would laugh, but it wouldn't understand human language, and if they laugh too much, the flowers would wither and fall.^[3] The Rōō Sawa (老媼茶話), a collection of strange tales from Aizu, also quotes the Sancai Tuhui while making statements about this tree.^[4]

In popular culture[edit]

In the InuYasha anime series, episodes 57 and 58 revolve around Tokajin, a sage who feeds humans to a demonic tree with human-faced fruit in exchange for the immortality the fruit can grant.
In the music video for Dir en grey's song 'Obscure', a woman resembling a geisha is seen taking a baby's head from a tree.
The Pokémon Exeggutor may have been based on the Jinmenju.
In several Castlevania games, there is a monster called 'corpseweed' that appears as a tall plant with a head dangling from the end.
In the Sega Saturn port of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night there is a new enemy Jinmenju which looks almost exactly like a jinmenju.
In the game Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return, there are fruits in Donglin Forest that either cry or laugh.
In the film Dead and Deader, there is an enemy tree-like creature, called Sun, with human faces, which may be inspired by this creature.
